For more than 25 years Dr. David M. Mathis has provided healthcare to inmates in Virginia, Maryland, and California. He worked for ten years as Physician & Surgeon at the 2,500 inmate California Medical Facility (CMF), a state prison for inmates with medium to high acuity medical issues. His broad corrections experience includes emergency care, acute care, chronic care, hospice care and utilization management. Designated a Certified Correctional Health Professional-Clinical Provider, he is also Board Certified in Family Medicine with added credentials in Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine.
Dr. Mathis spent four years as Medical Director of Eastern Correctional Institution (ECI), Maryland's largest prison (3,500 inmates) and co-authored a published study, “Point-of-care INR Determination, Coumadin Dosage Changes, and Use of a Historical, Self-updating Database in a Prison.”
During his time in family medicine private practice, he taught medical students from George Washington University School of Medicine and the University of Virginia Medical School as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Health Care Sciences.
His interest in prison medicine developed early in his career while providing health care to inmates in Virginia. Dr. Mathis has extensive experience in correctional healthcare issues. He provides expert witness consultation and testimony to law firms.
Dr. Mathis assists attorneys and the courts throughout the United States, meeting in-person and/or remotely.
